Not many things are as stressful as being pulled over for a drunk driving investigation. After all, the police must have probable cause to stop you for a DUI investigation. Amidst the anxiety that comes with a DUI stop, it is important to understand that what you do can impact the outcome of your case.

Here are important things you need to keep in mind when you are stopped for a drunk driving investigation:

Pull over and park your car at a safe spot

If are directed to stop, turn on your signal, pull over and stop immediately. Do keep in mind that the police will be recording everything about the stop including how you bring the vehicle to a stop. You do not want to do anything that will raise further suspicion.

Remain calm…and in the car

Once you have pulled over and stopped at a safe spot, roll down your window and remain in the driver’s seat. Do not get out of the car. Additionally, place your hands where the police can see them as they approach.

As the police approach your vehicle, remain polite. Again, keep in mind that the police will be recording your conversation. Do not be rude or combative with law enforcement.

Watch your words

Most often, the police will ask you for your identity and/or driver’s license. It is important that you cooperate and provide these. They might also ask if you have been out drinking. This is where you get to watch what you say. Do not admit to drinking as this will amount to a confession. Instead, politely advise the officer that you are not comfortable answering this question in the absence of your legal counsel.
