Is it legal to carry a knife in Missouri?

On Behalf of | Oct 17, 2025 | Criminal Defense

At first glance, it may seem as though Missouri has few prohibitions against carrying a knife on your person. But there are some deviations that knife owners should be aware of.

Below, we address the specifics of Missouri knife laws.

Pocketknives face few restrictions

Here in Missouri, pocketknives with blade lengths of 4” or less can be carried concealed. With these types of knives, even minors are allowed to carry them on their person.

What about longer-bladed knives?

No specific knife is banned in this state. However, the state defaults to federal law when dealing with automatic knives, e.g., switchblades.  Missouri dropped its restrictions on switchblade knives back in 2012.

Here’s where it gets confusing. The state upholds federal laws regarding switchblade ownership and sales, although authorities maintain that those in Missouri who own, carry, handle, make, repair, sell, sharpen or transport these automatic knives can do so legally.

What if I use my knife in a fight?

Depending on the circumstances, someone who assaults another person with an automatic or long-bladed knife could face charges. Also, police can sometimes be overzealous in arresting someone who assaulted another person with a knife of questionable length or design. So, while you might not get convicted by the court, an arrest may still occur.

What to do if you get arrested for a knife incident

As with all arrests, it is better to remain silent and refuse to answer police questions until you have had the opportunity to speak with your defense attorney. They can review the arrest report and offer a strategy to use in your defense.
